How It Works
Most backpackers run a 500-1,500 calorie daily deficit because carrying enough food is heavy. This is fine for trips under 5 days — your body uses fat stores. On longer trips, performance degrades noticeably after day 4-5. To maximize calories per ounce: olive oil (240 cal/oz), nuts (170 cal/oz), peanut butter (165 cal/oz). 3,500 calories = approximately 1 lb of body fat.
