How It Works
Average kayak speed is 3-4 mph on flat water, while canoes average 2.5-3.5 mph. River current adds 1-2 mph downstream. Plan for 15-20 miles per day maximum on multi-day trips to allow time for breaks, portages, and camp setup. The most common mistake is overestimating speed — wind, waves, fatigue, and stops reduce actual speed significantly. Always wear a PFD (life jacket), file a float plan with someone on shore, and check weather forecasts. Bring a dry bag for electronics, and pack 1 liter of water per hour of paddling. On rivers, scout any rapids from shore before running them.
