How It Works

USGS 7.5-minute quadrangle maps use 1:24,000 scale (1 inch = 2,000 feet). National Forest maps are typically 1:63,360 (1 inch = 1 mile). Remember: map distances are horizontal — actual trail distance is longer due to elevation changes. Use a map wheel or string along curves for accurate trail measurements.
