How It Works
Rock climbing rope should be at least twice the route height plus 20-30 feet for knots, anchors, and lowering. A standard 60m (197 ft) rope handles routes up to ~85 ft for toprope or ~95 ft for lead. Quickdraws are clipped every 8-10 feet on lead climbs. Climbing burns 500-900 calories per hour depending on difficulty and body weight — similar to running. The Yosemite Decimal System (YDS) grades routes from 5.0 (easy scramble) to 5.15 (elite). Grades 5.6-5.8 are good for beginners, 5.10-5.11 is intermediate, and 5.12+ is advanced. Always check gear for wear, and never climb without proper safety equipment.
